Captain America Reborn, Part Two

August 26th, 2009 · No Comments

Reading Captain America Reborn #2 is a little frustrating. Sometimes, if the writers are going to write a graphic novel, they need to go straight to the graphic novel.

While this story is interesting—it is taking too long to tell that story, which is made of many parts. Did the writers bite more off than they could chew? I don’t think so—but the back and forth between Steve Rogers in 1944 (literally bouncing around the 1940’s) and Bucky Barnes in the present gets a little crazy. The back and forth doesn’t allow this reader time to adjust between the two.

I am interested, however, in the origin story of Captain America—which should be playing a big part in the Reborn series. I like the idea presented of Steve Rogers going through it again and reliving the time when he was just getting started. Readers need to understand the background more than I think they do. In this politically correct world where there are no bad guys—it is hard to understand what makes Captain America special. The only way to do this is to go back to a time when we did see evil men doing evil things—purposely killing innocent people and bringing legitimate and free countries under his dictatorship. This is the strongest element of this series of five issues.

There is strength in this story—elements of hope. I must wait for another month in order to see how the story begins to make sense. I do believe it could be written in a way that the reader doesn’t have to wait for another for it to all make sense—but to wait for another issue to see how Captain America will once again prevail.
