Wizard 181 (NOV 2006) discusses a concern that in 20 years comics will become obsolete.  This doesn’t concern me; I think comics will continue through the devotion of  the companies and the readership.  With that said, I do wish to voice my opinion of why the industry is not fairing well with the younger generation of readers.

 

What is being written in the mainstream comics today is every bit as interesting and exciting as MTV and the OC, maybe more.  However, the face of comics today is of the 30 year old male; overweight and balding.  Does this face compare with the cool, attractive people that young people are bombarded with everyday?

 

Then, I look at the average comic book store and see a run down rented hole in an old shopping center.  Compare this to Game Stop or some of the other stores out there that are marketing the same group.  The industry needs to have more stores in malls and modern strip malls.  Not only will their appearance improve but people will be able to find them.

 

To encourage younger readers, I think that the face of comics needs to be evaluated to some degree.
