Maybe it’s just me…but, have you ever read a comic book and, at the end, realized that ther really was much to talk about. Batman 664 struck me that way. I enjoy blogging because I enjoy talking about the stories and the art of the comic books I read. But what happens when I really don’t have anything to say about a book? Typically, I just skip it and talk about something else. Today, however, I thaught that I would just write about the fact that I really don’t have anything to write about.
Not having anything to say happens more often than I would prefer. Batman 664 didn’t provide much to talk about, nothing absolutely terrible and nothing really great. The comic book was just “so, so”. I could’ve writte about how I enjoyed seeing Bruce Wayne playing the role of the playboy at the begining of the comic book, but, really that’s all that I had to say. I could’ve talked about how I wished that Grant Morrison, the writer, had left the prostitution scene out of the comic book, but I talked about that kind of stuff earlier this week on April 24, 2007. Other than that…nothing.
One of the problems that a writer has to face is the problem of saying something significant and memorable in every issue. That is very hard to do, trust me, it is the same struggle that I face as a preacher. Another problem that writters face is that they have to write the story over several issues of comic books for the story to reach a climax. However, this isn’t news. Comic book writing is not supposed to be easy. I think that is why, I think that it is so important for the story to be good. This is their job to overcome these obstacles. All too often I am faced with a no impact comic book. This concerns me not so that I will have something to talk about in my blog, but that I will be entertained when I read.

I avoided commenting on the your post about this before but I have to say something now. I just do not agree with you at all about the whole not having the prostitution scene. The DC Universe Comic Books are for teens and up. It is okay to have stuff like that. Johnny DC is for kids. That is where they should not have stuff like this.

I hear what you’re saying and I respectfully disagree. Granted the prostitution scene was not that big a deal, I think that the language used by Blitzkrieg in Catwoman #66 would be a better target to get my point across. I mentioned the prostitution scene to demonstrate that if I were going to dig up something to say, that was the closest thing I could use to make any comment at all. I avoided doing a post on that subject, because the prostitution scene provided a weak example at best. What I am advocating, however, is that editors take more responsibility to clean up the comics. I personnally don’t feel that the Johnny DC concept is the solution because most people who are buying comics for kids recognize that the option exists. I also don’t believe that Johnny DC doesn’t measure up in the quality of writing nor art to usher in the next generation of comic book readers.
