Comic Book Day backcbd

Dream a little dream

May 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

The other day I was in a group of people who was asked:  If you could do anything in the world what would it be–what would your dream be.  One said that he would be a famous basketball player, one said that he would ski the highest mountain, and I said that I would like to be the CEO of DC Comics.

It is a dream.  Is it attainable for me? No.  Do I have other dreams? Yes.  But, it would be really cool.  I would be terrible at it, but it’d be cool before I got fired.

I’d like to see DC Comics pushed forward in the market.  I’d like to see the Movies from DC mean something–why is it that DC is owned by Warner Brothers–but can not seem to get a handle on the Movie market?  I’d like to see more DC Comic Book for sale in book stores and Target stores.  I’d like to see more toys in the stores.  There is no reason that I can see that DC is not doing what Marvel is doing and more.

If I were the CEO of DC Comics–I would like DC Comics to become the powerhouse of comic book culture. The characters are too good not to use them–the stories are to good not to promote them, and the dream that they can provide can bring excitement to the next generation.

Comic Book Food

What do you eat when you read comic books?

This can be a big question. I like to spend a day reading my book–sit in a corner, with a cup of coffee, or tea–I prefer not to drink my Diet Coke in a glass when I read–but sometimes I will have one in a can.

But what do I eat?

M&Ms…They melt in your mouth and not in your hand.

This doesn’t work so well in Iraq, but at home in the air conditioned house, the M&M hold to their hard shell and do not mess up my fingers. This is a big deal, really. I never want to do something to hurt my collection. Is this collection in the greatest condition? No, that is not my priority–but it comes down to taking care of the collection and the collection is being built. Iwant to make sure that I have a clean collection for years to come.

Comic Book Heritage

EA Sorting Comic BooksOne of the most fun parts of being home and watching our children grow up is to see them interested in what I’m interested in.

A major event lately is the opening of a new box of comic books. About every two weeks I get a shipment of comic books from Midtown Comics–they do a good job, except for the packing peanuts, they are a pain. When I receive a new box, I usually wait until after dinner and after the baths are taken before I sit on the couch to open the new box. On each side of me sit my two two-year-old girls as I open the box a look at each comic book as I pull it from the brown paper bag that Midtown wraps them in.

Pulling each comic book out, I’m able to quiz the girls on which comic book hero that they are seeing and I take the tape off the back of the comic book bag, so that it will stick. This has gotten to be a special time for the girls–with noisy laughter and excitement.

Sometimes, I have to spend some times sorting my books in their boxes so that they will be organized and stored safely. I enjoy the time much more when they ask to help. Yes, they aren’t the most effcien, but the joy of sharing your hobby with the next generation makes it all worthwhile.
